Five Yellow Jackets record double-digit kills for the first time since 2015

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech volleyball (11-3, 3-0 ACC) continued its spotless start to conference play after defeating Duke (9-4, 1-2 ACC) 3-1 on Friday night in Durham, N.C.

Quick Hits:

  • For the first time in 11 years, five Yellow Jackets recorded double-digit kills. The last time the Jackets saw had players reach double figures was in Tech’s five-set win over Wake Forest in 2015 (Annika Van Gunst (15), Teegan Van Gunst (14), Sydney Wilson (13), Lauren Pitz (10) and Ashley Askin (10).
  • Tech’s offense was led by Bianca Garibaldi who recorded a season high 14 kills along with a .550 attack percentage.
  • Alida Bennour saw her 10th match of the season recording double-digit kills as she contributed 13 to Tech’s 60 kills against the Blue Devils.
  • Sophomore Zoe Humphrey not only saw her first double-digit kill match as a Yellow Jacket but tied her career high for kills with 10 on Friday night.
  • Magda Kobaidze recorded her sixth match of the season with double-digit kills with 11 while Laura Bieleski recorded her seventh with 10.
  • Heloise Soares earned her 16th career double-double, fourth double-double of the season, with a season high 48 assists and 10 digs.
  • The senior’s 48 assists marked her 19th career match recording 40 or more assists as a Yellow Jacket.
  • As Tech’s sole libero, Mana Kaneko recorded her third kill of the season while racking up 14 digs for her eighth match of the season with double-digit digs.
  • Against the Blue Devils, the Yellow Jackets recorded both their most kills (60) and most assists (57) so far this season.
  • Friday’s win marks the first time since 2022 that the Yellow Jackets opened conference play 3-0.

SET BY SET

Set 1 (GT 23 – Duke 25)

Both Tech and Duke traded points throughout the first set with the Yellow Jackets holding the lead for much of the opening frame. A late offensive push from the Blue Devils was enough to take the 23-22 lead and force the Jackets to fight back with only two more points needed for the hosts to take set one. Despite one final kill from Bieleski to tie up the set, Duke claimed the final two points to take set one. Bieleski and Bennour opened the match with four kills each while Soares’ first set included 15 assists on 30 attempts. Humphrey contributed three kills to Tech’s 16 set one kills alongside Kobaidze who recorded three kills and three digs.

Set 2 (GT 25 – Duke 19)

Set two began similar to set one with both the Jackets and the Blue Devils fighting not only for the lead but for some distance. Tech was able to get just that as it went on a three-point run and forced a Duke timeout (8-4). The Jackets held the lead through to the 25-19 set two win while staying at least two-points ahead of the Blue Devils. Bieleski found her stride in the second set as she led Tech’s offense with five kills alongside a .300 attack percentage. Humphrey boasted a .750 attack percentage, collecting three kills along the way. Garibaldi was right there offensively as well with four kills and a .500 attack percentage. Soares added another 13 assists to her now 28 assist match total while leading the Jackets in digs in set two (5).

Set 3 (GT 25 – Duke 20)

Tech called its first timeout of the third set early as the Jackets found themselves trailing 4-0 to start the third set. Consistent effort and a four-point run proved to be enough not only to tie the set but to take the 9-8 lead. Duke was able to work its way back to tie the match 14-14, but Tech would go on to outscore the Blue Devils, 11-6, for the 25-20 set three win. Kobaidze was nearly flawless through the third set with four kills on five swings along with one ace, three digs, and one block. Garibaldi had a strong third set as well, recording four kills, two aces, one dig, and two blocks.

Set 4 (GT 25 – Duke 17)

In the final frame, Tech and Duke began trading points until Tech took its only timeout of the set with the score tied at 7-7. Coming out of the timeout, the Blue Devils took the lead before the Jackets went on a five-point run (12-8). The Jackets maintained at least a six-point lead throughout the remainder of the set to take the final frame, 25-17. The Blue Devils had no answer for Garibaldi in the final set as she recorded four kills on five swings as well as a pair of blocks. Bennour contributed three final kills in the fourth set while also having a hand in each of Tech’s four blocks. Humphrey finished the day with a .333 attack percentage, good for three kills, as well as two blocks.
