Eagles Overcome Jackets with Late Run

Tech outscored 21-0 in fourth quarter of 38-23 defeat

THE FLATS – Quarterback Haynes King rushed for 150 yards, passed for 204 and helped Georgia Tech build a 23-17 lead after three quarters, but Boston College rallied for 21-straight fourth-quarter points and the Yellow Jackets fell to the visiting Eagles, 38-23, on Saturday afternoon at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field.

Georgia Tech continued its pattern of alternating losses and wins this season to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Eagles won their third-straight game, evening their ACC record at 2-2 and improving to 4-3 overall.

Trailing 17-10 at halftime, the Yellow Jackets opened the second half with an acrobatic, diving interception in the end zone by Ahmari Harvey a minute-and-a-half into the third quarter. Just three plays later, King ran 71 yards – Georgia Tech’s longest play of the season – for a touchdown to knot the score at 17-17.

Two possessions later, the Jackets marched 89 yards in eight plays and took its first lead since the first quarter on a 19-yard touchdown pass from King to Avery Boyd that made it 23-17 Georgia Tech with 2:08 to go in the third quarter (an errant snap led to Tech missing the PAT).

Unfortunately for the Yellow Jackets, the lead would be short-lived, as Boston College put together scoring drives of 72, 72 and 60 yards in the fourth quarter. Combined with a pair of interceptions – Tech’s second and third turnovers of the afternoon – the Eagles outscored the Jackets 21-0 in the final period to claim the victory.

Despite King’s 354 yards of total offense, Georgia Tech was outgained by a 563-452 margin in the loss.

Tech wraps up a two-game homestand next Saturday against 10th-ranked North Carolina. Kickoff time and television coverage for the contest will be announced Sunday.

  • King’s 71-yard touchdown run in the third quarter was the longest rush of his career (prev.: 35 at Wake Forest – Sept. 23).
  • King’s 71-yard touchdown run was the longest rush by a Georgia Tech QB since TaQuon Marshall’s 78-yard touchdown run vs. Virginia on Nov. 4, 2017.
  • King has thrown at least one touchdown pass in each of Georgia Tech’s seven games this season. His 17 touchdown passes are tied for the most ever by a GT QB through the first seven games of the season.
