Georgia Tech wrapped up fall camp 2019 with a scrimmage at Mercedes-Benz Stadium

PRACTICE NO. 15 — THURSDAY, AUG. 16

Georgia Tech football wrapped up fall camp 2019 in style on Friday when it held its second intrasquad scrimmage at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Downtown Atlanta.

Once again, head coach Geoff Collins and his staff mimicked a regular-season game, traveling to a hotel on Thursday night and going through a typical pregame routine in one of the world’s premier stadiums. It’s good preparation for the Yellow Jackets, who will play five games over five years in the home of the Atlanta Falcons, beginning in 2020.

Highlights from the scrimmage included:

  • Georgia Tech’s offense scored six touchdowns in full-field scenarios, including pair of touchdown passes by sophomore QB Liam Byrne (25 yards to true freshmen WR Kalani Norris and 24 yards to true freshman RB Spencer Massey) and a pair of touchdown runs by true freshman RB Jamious Griffin (10 yards and 15 yards). Touchdown carries by veteran QBs Lucas Johnson (50 yards) and Tobias Oliver (8 yards) rounded out the scoring.
  • Defensively, Georgia Tech forced three turnovers, including a 70-yard scoop-and-score on fumble recovery by true freshman Wesley Walker on the first play of the second half. Other takeaways included fumble forced by junior DL Chris Martin and recovered by junior DL Antonneous Clayton and an interception on the final play of the scrimmage by sophomore DB Avery Showell, which clinched the win for the Coca-Cola team over the Waffle House team.
  • Georgia Tech’s place kickers participated in the scrimmage, with Brenton King making field goals from 21, 36 and 49 yards and Wesley Wells making one from 26 yards. The duo was perfect on extra point attempts.

PRACTICE NO. 14 — THURSDAY, AUG. 15

As fall camp 2019 winds to an end, Georgia Tech football entered its 14th practice trying to place the finishing touches on its preseason goals.

With classes beginning Monday and just one practice left of camp, the Yellow Jackets worked on individual drills, offensive and defensive schemes, and special teams units.

The Tech coaching staff then staged a huge surprise for its student-athletes after all their hard work this camp. After being brought over for what they believed to be a film session in the Brock Indoor Practice Facility, an alarm sounded, the doors flung open and the Jackets were chased outside by water balloons and waterguns only to be greeted by a monstrous water slide and ice cream.

PRACTICE NO. 13 — WEDNESDAY, AUG. 14

Georgia Tech football had perhaps its most smooth practice of the fall camp 2019 as it went through a myriad of scenarios and game formations as the Jackets slowly but surely make their way to Opening Night on Aug. 29.

The highlight of the day was during the middle of practice, when Tech split into two offenses and two defenses and worked back and forth across the field displaying the fruits of the spring, summer and the 12 practices prior to Wednesday.

Coaches continually applauded both sides of the ball as dazzling after dazzling play was made.

Aug. 14, 2019

PRACTICE NO. 12 — TUESDAY, AUG. 13

As it entered the 12th practice of the preseason and fall camp, Georgia Tech hit the field firing on all cylinders in the morning workout session. The Jackets’ defense shined early by working on tackles and schemes as they were able to both apply pressure and protect down field throughout the first half.

Tech then attacked offensively and shined in endzone and 2-minute drills, particularly in the aerial assault where the tight ends and wide receivers relished in a multitude of well-placed passes for six.

The day ended for Tech by when the team ventured just 17 minutes up the road to the home of the Atlanta Braves, SunTrust Park. The team enjoyed the Braves’ 5-3 win over the New York Mets in the first of a nine-game homestand.

PRACTICE NO. 11 — MONDAY, AUG. 12

Georgia Tech football got right back after it on Monday as it entered its final two weeks of prep before opening night at Clemson on Thursday, Aug. 29.

The Yellow Jackets battled through a humid, Atlanta day after it had a brief afternoon summer shower that heated things up. Tech was up for the task, however, and went fully live for several periods, working on situational and game-like scenarios — all this added with the music cranked up loud to simulate the chaos of a real game, whether at home or on the road.

PRACTICE NO. 10 — SATURDAY, AUG. 10

Georgia Tech football held its first intrasquad scrimmage of the 2019 season on Saturday at Pope H.S. in Marietta.

Head coach Geoff Collins and his staff aimed to mimic a road game with Saturday’s scrimmage, from traveling to a hotel on Friday night to arriving at an unfamiliar venue and going through a typical pregame routine on Saturday.

Highlights from the scrimmage included:

  • Georgia Tech’s offense scoring five touchdowns in full-field scenarios, including a a pair of touchdown runs by junior quarterback Lucas Johnson (1 and 7 yards), a 3-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Liam Byrne to true freshman Kalani Norris, and a pair of touchdown passes from sophomore quarterback Tobias Oliver — a 10-yarder to true freshman tight end Dylan Deveney and a 61-yarder to true freshman wide receiver Ahmarean Brown.
  • Brown’s touchdown catch was perhaps the biggest offensive highlight of the scrimmage, as he took a short pass from Oliver over the middle, made a handful of would-be tacklers miss and then showed off his world-class speed in racing past the rest of the defense for the long score.
  • Of the offense’s five full-field touchdown drives, three were at least 11 plays long while the other two were just three plays apiece.
  • Defensively, Georgia Tech forced four turnovers during game scenarios, including interceptions by junior linebacker David Curry and junior defensive back Tariq Carpenter and fumble recoveries by true freshman defensive lineman Sylvain Yondjouen and redshirt freshman defensive end Curtis Ryans.
  • Ryans’ takeaway was perhaps the biggest defensive highlight of the scrimmage, as he scooped up a loose ball in the backfield, stiff-armed a would-be tackler and rumbled 75 yards for a touchdown.
  • The scrimmage wrapped up with an overtime scenario. The Waffle House team began the overtime period by scoring in just three plays, capped by a 15-yard touchdown run by redshirt freshman running back Christian Malloy and a PAT by sophomore place kicker Brenton King. However, the Coca-Cola team needed just one play to score on a 25-yard pass from true freshman Jordan Yates to junior tight end Joseph Macrina. The Coca-Cola team then elected to go for a two-point conversion and the win, which they got when Byrne scored from three yards out, setting off a wild celebration and landing Byrne with the coveted “Competition Is King” crown for the day.

After the scrimmage, the team boarded buses and headed to nearby Six Flags White Water, where they enjoyed some fun in the sun and water.

PRACTICE NO. 9 — FRIDAY, AUG. 9

Georgia Tech football entered its ninth practice of the fall camp with high energy, but pointed effort as it treated Friday’s workout as a regular pre-gameday practice. The Yellow Jackets will do a full-team scrimmage on Saturday, which the team is treating like a regular season game as much as possible.

In addition to its usual work in individual drills and 11-on-11, Tech also got after it in situational game scenarios, modeling game-like intensity and setup with officials to further ready themselves for the 2019 season and its opener at Clemson on Thursday, Aug. 29.

PRACTICE NO. 8 — THURSDAY, AUG. 8

As fall camp carries on and enters its eighth official practice, Georgia Tech football continues to make strides and showed off on Thursday with multiple electric plays.

The day began as the offense pounded the endzone, thanks to early muscling and speed from redshirt sophomore running back Jordan Mason. That only sparked the defense into a strong second effort in the 11-on-11’s as redshirt junior linebacker David  Curry and redshirt junior defensive back Ajani Kerr made multiple stops.

PRACTICE NO. 7 — WEDNESDAY, AUG. 7

In perhaps one of its sharpest practices so far, Georgia Tech football put on a show in its seventh practice of the fall. Competition and energy were at an all-time high as the practice began with positional drills before ratcheting up to 11 for its “Wreck ‘Em” drill.

From there, practice never let up as the team repeatedly made impressive plays in both 11-on-11 and 2-minute drills. A highlight from the day came when redshirt freshman quarterback James Graham targeted redshirt junior Jair Hawkins-Anderson for a terrific touchdown pass in the back-corner of the endzone.

PRACTICE NO. 6 — TUESDAY, AUG. 6

In its second day of action in full gear, Georgia Tech football took on a hot Atlanta morning for the sixth practice of fall camp 2019. The heat only raised the bar as the team continued to compete at a high level as it nears gameday.

In addition to its usual individual workouts and 11-on-11 scrimmages, the Yellow Jackets also spent much of practice working out its special teams units.

PRACTICE NO. 5 — MONDAY, AUG. 5

After four practices limited by NCAA regulations and its first, complete off-day, Monday’s morning practice for Georgia Tech football was full-on pads and 100 percent effort as the Yellow Jackets make their way toward the 2019 season opener on Aug. 29 in Death Valley.

Neither the offense nor the defense held anything back, getting to make tackles and break tackles with game-like intensity for the first time since the spring. Junior defensive back Tariq Carpenter had no less than four interceptions on the day as he set the tone for both sides as they battled through 11-on-11.

PRACTICE NO. 4 — FRIDAY, AUG. 3

Another record-setting crowd showed its excitement for the start of Geoff Collins era at Georgia Tech, as an estimated 8,000 fans came through the gates of Bobby Dodd Stadium on Saturday for the Yellow Jackets’ annual Fan Day.

Collins and the Jackets welcomed fans for an open practice on Saturday morning, followed by a two-hour on-field autograph and photo session.

Fans showed their appreciation for the Yellow Jackets throughout the practice, as raucous applause was a common occurrence, particularly when quarterbacks and receivers hooked up for completions as part of Georgia Tech’s new pro-style spread offense. The crowd also gave the Jackets a loud ovation at the end of the practice, which was reciprocated by the student-athletes and coaches.

After practice, it was the team’s turn to show their appreciation for fans, as Collins and his student-athletes signed autographs and posed for pictures for two hours.

PRACTICE NO. 3 — FRIDAY, AUG. 2

Shells were out and the intensity was up as Georgia Tech football took the field for the third time during fall camp. The reps continued to fire at a high rate of speed as the Yellow Jackets hit more 11-on-11 drills, in addition to the individual and positional workouts.

Tech also worked through much of the aerial assault that will treat fans during the season. One after the other, each quarterback ran deep plays and cross-field cuts for wideouts as the Jackets picked up chunks of yards in a hurry. The defense wasn’t letting the offense have all the fun, however, as sophomore defensive back Juanyeh Thomas made a huge play over the middle cutting off a pass for an interception and returning it for a touchdown.

Fans are in for a real treat as Saturday’s 10 a.m. practice is open to the public as part of Georgia Tech’s Fan Day. Players and head coach Geoff Collins will be available for autographs after practice concludes. More details can be found HERE.

PRACTICE NO. 2 — THURSDAY, AUG. 1

With final exams for summer session classes underway, Georgia Tech football turned right around from its first practice of fall camp to an 8 a.m. Thursday practice. Reps were abound in the slightly cooler morning weather as team worked hard through its final day of NCAA-mandated practices without pads.

Although individual and positional drills were a main focus, the team did break into 11-on-11 simulations, running through the plays that will drive the remainder of fall camp.

The real fun begins on Friday morning when the Yellow Jackets move to shells and begin transitioning into full-scale practice.

PRACTICE NO. 1 — WEDNESDAY, JULY 31

Georgia Tech football officially opened the 2019 season on Wednesday when it held its first practice of the campaign at Rose Bowl Field and the John and Mary Brock Football Practice Facility.

Per NCAA rules, Wednesday’s first practice of the year was conducted in helmets and shorts with no contact. However, with a heat index in the 90s for the only scheduled afternoon practice of fall camp, much of Wednesday’s workout was moved inside the Brock Facility. Additionally, head coach Geoff Collins stopped the practice several times for extended water breaks.

Due to Georgia Tech’s final exams schedule for summer classes, the Yellow Jackets will have a quick turnaround from Wednesday’s afternoon workout to the second practice of the year, which will be held early Thursday morning.
