THE FLATS – Georgia Tech, which fielded just five players Friday, were unable to score a point and lost their sixth consecutive match, 7-0, to eighth-ranked North Carolina at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
The Yellow Jackets (7-12, 1-8 ACC), limited to only five players the rest of the spring due to an assortment of injuries and other issues, were unable to win a set in singles and were swept in doubles by the Tar Heels (21-3, 8-1 ACC), who kept their hold on second place in the conference standings. Tech visits No. 13 Duke Sunday.
North Carolina swept both doubles matches against Tech, which has two ranked pairs. The Tar Heels’ 27th-ranked tandem of Brayden Schnur and Brett Clark defeated Tech’s No. 43 duo of Carlos Benito and Eduardo Segura, 8-3, to clinch the point after Oystein Steiro and Nelson Vick downed the Jackets’ 79th-ranked pair of Cole Fiegel and Nathan Rakitt, 8-4.
A walkover at the No. 6 position automatically gave the North Carolina a 2-0 lead when singles play began, and the Tar Heels quickly wrapped up the overall match with Nelson Vick’s 6-2, 6-1 win over Colin Edwards at No. 5, and Steiro’s 6-2, 6-2 win over Benito at No. 3.
Fiegel, Segura and Rakitt lost in succession in straight sets to finish out the match.
