Know the Coach - Danny Hall

July 20, 2009

ATLANTA – This summer, each Georgia Tech head coach will be featured in a new series — “Know The Coach.” Each week, a different head coach has been profiled where you can get to know them outside the competition field. Week seven features baseball coach Danny Hall. Check out what he had to say…

Born: November 27, 1954 in Weston, West Virginia
Status: Married
Alma Mater: Miami, Ohio (1977)
What’s on TV: SportsCenter, any MLB game, and although I hate to admit it – American Idol
What’s in my iPod: Anything and everything – I listen to all kinds of music. It doesn’t matter if it’s country, rock, hip-hop or jazz. I’ll listen to anything.
What I drive: Mazda CX9, courtesy of Jim Ellis, who has been my car dealer since I was first hired at Georgia Tech
Favorite flicks: I love Bull Durham, and back in the day I loved all of the Indiana Jones movies.
What I’m reading: The Mental Game of Baseball
Magazine Subscriptions: ESPN The Magazine, Sports Illustrated, Atlanta Magazine, The Sporting News and Baseball America
Bookmarks: Ramblinwreck.com to see how our guys are doing in summer baseball, as well as ESPN and MLB.com
Worst habit: Procrastination, especially when it comes to working out!
On my office walls: Memorabilia from the different guys that I’ve coached, family photos and framed covers of any publications that my current or former players have made
Would love to trade places with for a day: Joe Torre
First job: Cleaning pools for Roger Hornsby Pools in Coolville, Ohio. He built both in-ground and above-the-ground pools and hired me to cut his grass and clean all the pools he had on site.
Talent I’d like to have: I wish I could play the piano.
Favorite athlete to watch in other sports: LeBron James
Best concert and sporting event I’ve ever attended: The best concert was the first time I saw Bruce Springsteen in 1979, and a close second would have been the Eagles in Philips Arena. The best sporting event would probably be watching the World Series in Boston – I took my son with me and it was fun getting to see Jason Varitek play in that. The one I liked participating in the most was the College World Series.
One coaching peer I truly respect: Mike Martin at Florida State
Favorite city to visit: I like Chicago a lot.
Favorite team as a kid: Cincinnati Reds

Favorite attribute about myself: Smile
And least: My stomach, right now!

My bucket list: Win the College World Series, visit Europe, see my boys grow up to be successful
My motto: Work hard and do the best you can
The thing I enjoy most about game day is: The game itself
I have a sweet tooth for: Ice cream
Celebrity I’d love to hang with for a night: Derek Jeter
Celebrity some people say I look like is: Ed Harris
Most famous person I’ve met: Scott Boras, as well as all of the pro athletes I’ve met and/or coached
