AUBURN, Ala. – Georgia Tech baseball led 7-0 early, but was unable to hang on, falling 12-11 to No. 18 Auburn in a slugfest on Tuesday night at Plainsman Park.
The Yellow Jackets (13-4) struggled to close the door on innings early, surrendering seven two-out runs, as the Tigers (13-3-1) scored four in the third, two in the fifth and five in the sixth to tie the game.
At the plate, Tech was led by six multi-hit batters. Jake DeLeo led them all with five hits, while Drew Compton drove in a game-high four runs on three hits. Stephen Reid finished with four hits, while Jack Rubenstein recorded three and Kristian Campbell and Nicholas Romano recorded two apiece.
Buoyed by six doubles in the third inning, Tech hit eight on the night to tie the program record (twice – last at Wake Forest, April 19, 2009).
LHP Cody Carwile (1-1) received the loss, allowing the walk-off run in the bottom of the 12th. Carwile was the last of a stellar trio of relief pitching in RHP Jackson Vaughan (1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R) and RHP Terry Busse (2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R). Carwile punched out five in his 2.2 innings of work, allowing three hits but just the one run.
Auburn was led at the plate by Justin Kirby, who went 4-for-6 with three RBI. RHP Chase Isbell (2-1) got the win, throwing 2.0 innings of one-hit ball to close.
Georgia Tech continues its four-game road trip when it heads to No. 3-ranked Louisville on March 17-19. First pitch is set for Friday at 6 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra.
