May 21, 2008

TULSA, Okla. – Georgia Tech freshman Guillermo Gomez fell to Bassam Beidas of Pepperdine, 6-3, 7-6 (5), Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Singles Championship at the Case Center on the University of Tulsa campus.

Beidas jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead but Gomez would storm back by winning the next three games from the Cairo, Egypt native. Beidas quickly responded by finishing off Gomez 6-3 in the first set.

Gomez and Beidas would stay on serve throughout the second set before Beidas finished off the Tech freshman 7-5 in the tiebreaker to move on to the second round.

Gomez’s successful rookie campaign comes to an end after earning his first bid into the NCAA Singles Championship and being named the Atlantic Coast Conference and ITA Mideast Region Rookie of the Year.
