CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Georgia Tech sophomore Guillermo Gomez advanced to the round of 16 at the ITA Mideast Regional with a pair of wins on Saturday in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Gomez, the tournament’s No. 3 seed, began the day with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of William & Mary’s Sebastien Vidal in the round of 64 before taking down Virginia Commonwealth’s Emil Lindgren 6-1, 6-2 in his second match of the day. Gomez moves his singles record to 11-2 on the season after picking up his seventh win in a row.
Four other Yellow Jackets took the court on Saturday but none were able to make it past the round of 32. Freshman Kevin King defeated Drew Courtney of Virginia 6-1, 7-6 in the morning, but fell to Radford’s Ivan Salec 7-6 (8), 6-2, one round later.
Sophomore Eliot Potvin also reach the round of 32 with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over UNC’s Andrew Crone. However, he could not get past the tournament’s overall top seed in Virginia’s Dom Inglot, falling 6-3, 6-2.
Gomez will face UNC’s Clay Donato on Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Indoor Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.
