ATLANTA – Kevin Larsen shot a one-over-par 73, and Roberto Castro added a two-over 74 to pace Georgia Tech, and the third-ranked Yellow Jackets shot a 17-over team round of 305 Friday to stand 16th among 18 teams after the first round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate golf tournament in Rocky Face, Ga.
The 54-hole event is being played at The Farm Golf Club, a 7,010-yard, par 72 layout near Dalton, Ga. The field features nine of the nation’s top 25 teams.
Florida and Georgia State were the only teams to break par Friday. The Gators took the lead with a six-under-par 282, while the Panthers stood at four-under-par 288. Duke was in third place at even-par 288, with defending champion Georgia in fourth at 289, and Texas Tech in fifth at 292.
The Yellow Jackets, 23 shots off the lead, counted a pair of 79s from freshmen Cameron Tringale and David Dragoo. Larsen is tied for 19th place individually, while Castro is tied for 27th place. Mike Barbosa shot 80 for Tech.
Larsen and Castro each were even par on the back side for Tech, which started on No. 1. Tringale and Dragoo, however, combined to score 13-over-par over the same nine holes after shooting one-over collectively on the front.
Chris Kirk of Georgia had the individual lead by one stroke after a five-under-par 67.
