Georgia Tech #ProJackets Golf Report

THE FLATSRichy Werenski comes up with his highest finish on the PGA Tour in 2022-23 … Cameron Tringale continued to play well in LIV Golf Series, gets PGA Championship endorsement from teammate Phil Mickelson … Matt Kuchar is Tech’s only representative in PGA Championship this week … More details below in this week’s Georgia Tech #ProJackets Report.

WERENSKI POSTS BEST 2022-23 FINISH AT AT&T BYRON NELSON

Continuing to compete this season on his two-year exemption for having won the 2020 Barracuda Championship, Richy Werenski had missed 16 cuts in 21 events this season, including five in his last six events coming into this weekend’s AT&T Byron Nelson.

But something clicked last weekend as the 8th-year PGA Tour pro tied for 11th at TPC Craig Ranch, posting an 18-under-par total of 266 and staying near the lead all weekend. It was Werenski’s highest finish of the 2022-23 season, surpassing his tie for 20th at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February and lifting him to 127th on the FedEx Cup points list.

He was one of four Yellow Jackets to make the at the Byron Nelson event, as Stewart Cink tied for 34th (-13), Matt Kuchar tied for 43rd (-12) and Vincent Whaley tied for 79th (-4). Cink recorded his best finish since a tie or 21st at the Sony Open in Hawaii in January, while Whaley played for the first time since early October and made a solid showing in his hometown.

Kuchar remains Tech’s top player on the FedEx Cup points list (45th) and is the only Yellow Jacket in the field for this week’s PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club on Rochester, N.Y.

TRINGALE CONTINUES TO PLAY SOLIDLY IN LIV SERIES

Continuing to play solid golf on his new tour, Cameron Tringale tied for 18th place last weekend in the LIV Golf Series event in Tulsa, Okla., posting an 8-under-par 202 with a closing 65. Tringale has finished in the top third of the field in all five events this year and has earned more than $2 million.

TRINGALE GETS ENDORSEMENT FOR PGA CHAMPIONSHIP BERTH

Former Masters champion Phil Mickelson, who will compete in the PGA competition from May 18-21, recently stated that Cameron Tringale deserves to be invited to the major competition. He stated:

“Cameron Tringale is not only my teammate, he’s one of the best putters in the game, has a short game I can’t beat, worked hard in the off season and gained 6-8 mph’s with the driver, and is ready to take his game to new levels. I hope he gets in next week. He deserves it.”

Cameron Tringale has a tremendous record on the LIV golf circuit this season, and based on his achievements, he deserves an invitation to the major championship. However, he plays LIV Golf, a 54-hole format game, which changes people’s perspectives on him competing in the PGA Championship. Moreover, he has not won any of the PGA Tour events in his career.

Tringale kicked off the new year with the Mayakoba event, which took place from February 24 to 26 at the El Cameleon Golf Course and saw him finish 20th. He finished 13th in the LIV Golf Tuscon before travelling to Orlando.

Editor’s note: Tringale did not qualify for a spot in the field this week.
