Georgia Tech Golf Team Set to Return to Action at Carpet Capital Collegiate

Oct. 4, 2001

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s golf team will be looking to defend its title from 2000, when it opens play at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Rocky Face, Ga., on Friday morning. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will be held at 6,906-yard, par-72 Farm Golf Club, and will feature 15 of the nation’s elite teams.

The Yellow Jackets have won each of the last two Carpet Capital Collegiate tournaments, including a one-shot victory over Clemson a year ago. Tech has been a dominant force in its one “home” tournament of the year, winning five of the 12 tournaments in the event’s history.

Tech will look to bounce back from a 10th-place showing to start the season a week ago at the Ping/Golfweek Preview Invitational, as the Jackets finished with a team score of 38 over par, and were well off the pace of team champion Clemson.

The Jackets will have four members of last week’s lineup in the field, as seniors Kris Mikkelsen and Matt Weibring will be joined be junior Troy Matteson and rookie Chan Wongluekiet. The new addition to the lineup will be freshman Nick Thompson, who earned a spot via a Wednesday afternoon qualifier this week.

As always, the field for the tournament will be a strong one, including the 2001 NCAA Champion Florida Gators and last week’s winner Clemson. Also in the mix this year will be some of last year’s top teams, including Georgia and Augusta State. Tech will also welcome ACC foes NC State, North Carolina, Virginia and Wake Forest to The Farm, along with Auburn, South Carolina and Tennessee of the SEC. East Tennessee State along with UCLA and UNLV will round out the 15 teams in the event.

Play will get under way on both the first and 10th tees on Friday morning beginning at 8:30 a.m., with Georgia Tech being matched up in threesomes with Georgia and Florida beginning at 9:58 a.m. Live scoring of the event will be available at live.golfstat.com, with full results available by 3:00 p.m., each day. The site will also feature course statistics and tee times for the following day’s round.
