Georgia Tech Day at Camp Sunshine

June 28, 2007

ATLANTA – Members of Georgia Tech’s football, basketball and tennis teams made their annual visit to Camp Sunshine Wednesday afternoon, spending time with the campers and putting on clinics for them.

Camp Sunshine provides programs throughout the year to give children with cancer the opportunity to enjoy normal activities like swimming, horseback riding, arts and crafts, and making friends. Children with cancer are normal children with special needs who want to participate fully in the everyday experiences of growing up.

Amanda McDowell, Alison Silverio and Christy Striplin from Tech’s national champion women’s tennis team, along with men’s tennis player George Gvelesiani, basketball player Lewis Clinch and football player Philip Wheeler represented the Yellow Jackets Wednesday afternoon.

“Life is a gift. And, although cancer is one of the worst things that can ever happen to a child and family, it can also teach the simple truth that every moment is something to cherish,” said Doug Allvine, director of business services for the Georgia Tech Athletic Association and the leader of the Tech group that will visit the camp Wednesday. “Georgia Tech is proud to support Camp Sunshine and its efforts.”

Camp Sunshine is conducted at the facilities of Camp Twin Lakes, which is located near Rutledge, Ga., approximately one hour east of Atlanta. If you have specific questions about Camp Sunshine or the numerous programs offered, please call the office at 404-325-7979 or visit the camp website.
