“Cole’s win was great,” said Tech head coach Kenny Thorne of Fiegel’s 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 win. “He’s had to face some real adversity lately, and the way he played today shows you just how well he’s handling it.”
Fiegel now moves to 4-0 in singles play this spring.
The other Yellow Jackets in singles action hung tough with the players from Memphis. Junior Eduardo Segura, sophomore Nathan Rakitt, and freshman Carlos Benito all took players ranked in the national top 100 into three sets before being outlasted. Segura was bested by No. 89 Johnny Grimal 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, Rakitt fell 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to No. 49 Connor Glennon, and Benito lost to No. 56 Joe Salisbury by a score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
“My expectations are always high,” Thorne said. “We’ve got a really talented group of guys here, and we were just a few points away in some of these matches. We’re going to keep going, keep pushing harder. I’m confident we’ll get where we need to be.”
Tech will be back in action Monday afternoon as they take on 3rd-ranked Georgia, following a match between No. 11 Ole Miss and Memphis.
“Anytime you’ve got guys playing matches against Georgia, it’s going to be exciting, said Thorne of the session, which begins at 1 p.m. “We’re hoping for an electric atmosphere here tomorrow. Hopefully the guys can take some of that support and do well.”
