Covering the Bases: Infield

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech softball returns to the field to open the 2022 season with the 23rd annual Buzz Classic, beginning Feb. 11 with a doubleheader against Saint Joseph’s and Villanova at Mewborn Field. Suiting up for the Yellow Jackets will be a familiar presence across the infield.

The White and Gold return all four regular starters from a season ago in graduate senior Tricia Awald, senior Bailee Zeitler, sophomore Jin Sileo and sophomore Mallorie Black.

Awald, a Justin’s World of Softball Third Team All-American, NFCA First Team All-Region and First Team All-ACC first baseman, leads the group as the most decorated Jacket from a season ago. The senior slugger topped the ACC and tallied the third highest on-base percentage in a season in program history (.555) as well as the eighth highest batting average (.411) and slugging percentage (.726) in the Tech record books in 2021. The Marietta, Ga., native started every game last season, also leading the team in hits (51), homeruns (11) and total bases (90).

Zeitler was a mainstay in the infield starting 44 games last season, tying for second on the team with seven doubles while tallying 24 hits, 16 runs, a pair of homeruns, 15 RBI and four stolen bases. Sileo anchored the defense in the middle as just a freshman in 2021, starting all 46 games and nearly singlehandedly turning a triple play. Along with locking down the infield, Sileo also swiped 12 bags to lead the team and picked up 25 hits, 24 runs, four homeruns and 11 RBI. Also returning to the infield is Black, who started 40 games a season ago. The Cumming, Ga., native totaled 22 hits, three doubles and nine RBI while scoring 12 runs in her first collegiate season.

Providing depth for the core four are junior Caroline Davis and freshman newcomers Grace Connelly, Madison Dobbins, and Bailey Chapin. Davis made eight starts as a designated player and appeared in 20 total games also serving as a pinch hitter.
