MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Led by a playoff victory by sophomore Mike Barbosa, the Georgia Tech golf team finished third at the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship with a 2-2-1 victory over Oklahoma State in the third place match on Sunday in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The three-day tournament was contested at Barefoot Resort’s par-72, 7,343-yard Dye Course.
With the team match tied a 2-2, Barbosa’s match with the Cowboy’s Zac Reynolds went to extra holes after Reynolds won the 18th hole to square the match. Barbosa won the 19th hole to give the Yellow Jackets the team victory and the third-place finish. The win was the third straight in the team match for Tech, as the Jackets rallied from a 2-0 deficit to claim the victory.
Tech fell behind early to OSU, as the Cowboys got wins at each of the first two spots in the lineup, with Zack Robinson defeating the Jackets’ Roberto Castro by a 2 and 1 score and Tyler Leon downing Tech’s Kevin Larsen by a 1 up count.
Chan Wongluekiet then closed things to 2-1 when he won the 16th and 17th holes of his match with Dayton Rose to claim a 2 and 1 victory at the No. 4 spot in the lineup. The Yellow Jackets knotted things at 2-2, when Thomas Jordan finished the weekend with an unblemished record at No. 3, taking a 1 up victory over Chris Clarke, with a win on the 17th hole of the match.
Georgia Tech has now completed its fall schedule and will be back in action on Feb. 11-13, when it travels to compete in the Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate in Waikoloa, Hawai’i. Full tournament results from the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship are available at www.golfstatlive.com.
