KENNESAW, Ga. – Georgia Tech softball (14-25) was unable to make up for a sluggish start against Kennesaw State (22-19), falling 5-2 on Friday at Bailey Park. The Yellow Jackets rallied in the top of the seventh to fill the base path, but failed to capitalize on the opportunity despite the go-ahead run stepping to the plate twice.
Kennesaw State adversely got off to a quick start, knocking a leadoff homerun in the bottom of the first. The Owls added three more runs in the third by way of an RBI double and a following single that scored two to take a 4-0 lead. Georgia Tech responded in the top of the fourth, cutting the Owl lead in half with a pair of runs on a sacrifice fly by sophomore infielder Caroline Davis and an RBI single courtesy of freshman infielder Mallorie Black. Kennesaw State came back with one more in the bottom half, going up 5-2 on an infield single. The Jackets would hit three straight singles in a last-gasp effort in the top of the seventh to load the bases with one down, but the Owls managed to get out of the jam by staving off two consecutive potential go-ahead runs at the plate to close out the game for a 5-2 victory.
Game Notes
- Sophomore catcher Emma Kauf had a strong day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a run scored to lead the Jacket bats.
- Senior outfielder Crosby Huckabay also had a solid day at the dish as she went 2-for-3 and was dinged once.
- Davis and Black both came away with RBI for Tech’s two runs, pushing home Kauf and junior infielder Bailee Zeitler.
- Sophomore right-hander Blake Neleman got the start in the circle, while senior righty Morgan Bruce and senior southpaw Madison McPherson each got action in relief.
