Yellow Jackets Fill Podium at Doc Hale Elite Meet

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Georgia Tech track & field started competed in the final day of the Doc Hale Elite Meet in Blacksburg, Va. on Saturday.

Nicole Fegans was invited to competed in the women’s 3000m elite race at the JDL Camel City Invitational. The race features pro runners and the best distance runners at the collegiate ranks. Fegans finished ninth in the race clocking in at 9:14.13.

In Blacksburg, the Jackets were prominently featured on the podium in the women’s high jump and the distance medley relay. The women’s high jump was won by Shanty Papakosta who put up a mark of 1.76m (5’9 ¼”). Coming in third was Carla Du Plessis who leapt to a new personal best of 1.71m (5’ 7 ¼”).

Tech had two podium finishers in each gender’s distance medley relay. The men’s distance medley relay was won by the Yellow Jackets who crossed in 9:48.50. Georgia Tech also took third in the race with a time of 9:57.40. The women’s distance medley relay had a silver and bronze finish for the Jackets who had two teams that finished in 11:32.99 and 12:01.41, respectively.

There were three more top ten finishes on the day for Georgia Tech. McKinley Thompson placed sixth in the men’s high jump with a mark of 1.93m (6’4”). Two Jackets finished in the top 10 in the women’s mile with Sarah Copeland finishing seventh and Mary Kathryn Knott finishing ninth with times of 4:52.72 and 4:56.31, respectively.

The White and Gold return to action on Feb. 11. The team will be split across the Clemson Tiger Paw Invitational and the Vanderbilt Music City Challenge.
