THE FLATS – Coming off an upset win over then-No. 6 Georgia and its first ACC win of the season, the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team jumped to No. 3 in the latest Oracle ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings released on Tuesday.
The Jackets boast a 7-1 overall record to go along with a 1-0 ACC ledger on the young season after opening conference play with a 4-3 victory over Florida State. This season, Tech owns four wins over nationally-ranked opponents including in-state rival Georgia, Michigan, defending National Champion Florida and FSU.
Last season, the Jackets spent 10 weeks ranked in the top 10 and finished the year at No. 9. This is the first time Tech has been ranked No. 3 since April 28, 2008 when it also held a No. 3 ranking. The Jackets held the No. 1 position for two weeks during the 2007-08 season after winning the National Championship in 2007.
The ACC claims the top three spots in the latest rankings with North Carolina owning the No. 1 position followed by Duke at No. 2.
Tech returns to the courts on Friday to welcome No. 24 Virginia. First serve is slated for 2:30 p.m. at Ken Byers Tennis Complex.
