Georgia Tech women’s basketball makes its first road trip of the 2023-24 season, visiting Rice on Thursday for the first time in program history. The Yellow Jackets and Owls have met once previously, on neutral ground in the Coqui Classic in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Dec. 21, 2019. Georgia Tech took the decision, 54-52, on a buzzer beater by Kierra Fletcher in Nell Fortner’s first year at the helm.
Georgia Tech brings a 2-0 record on the season into Thursday’s matchup, having completed the sweep of the season-opening homestand last Saturday, defeating Furman, 91-56. The Jackets took control of the game out of the gate and shot 52.1 percent from the field to mark the second game this season Tech has shot over 50.0 percent. Tonie Morgan led the way against the Paladins, finishing with team-highs in scoring (19 points), rebounds (9) and assists (7).
Rice has opened the season going 2-1, most recently dropping a 67-42 decision at TCU to cap a two-game road swing. The Owls opened the season with a victory at home over Houston Christian. Dominique Ennis leads Rice offensively on the young season, averaging 12.7 points per game, while Malia Fisher leads on the glass, securing 6.7 rebounds per game.
Competitive Drive Initiative Turn 2
Looking to build on the success of last year’s Competitive Drive Initiative, Georgia Tech, the Georgia Tech Foundation and Georgia Tech athletics are partnering once again to launch Competitive Drive Initiative Turn 2. CDI Turn 2 has a goal of raising $2.5 million in new gifts to the Alexander-Tharpe Fund’s Athletic Scholarship Fund by Dec. 31, and Georgia Tech and the Georgia Tech Foundation will match eligible gifts to accelerate the impact for Tech athletics. Like last year, not only will gifts to CDI Turn 2 be matched, but so will the contributor’s benefits in the way of A-T Fund giving levels and priority points.
