Women’s Basketball Opens Season on Monday

GEORGIA TECH (0-0) vs. COASTAL CAROLINA (0-0)

Georgia Tech officially tips off the 2023-24 women’s basketball season on Monday morning with a matinee against Coastal Carolina. On “Education Day,” over 3,000 elementary school kids will be in attendance as Georgia Tech has partnered with Atlanta Public Schools for this special edition. Due to the volume in attendance, parking in the McCamish Pavilion lot will be closed. Parking will be available in the Family Housing Deck located on 10th Street.

The Yellow Jackets return seven letterwinners from last season’s squad, while adding six newcomers. Amongst Tech’s six newcomers are fifth-year transfers Sydney Johnson (Powder Springs, Ga.) and Caitlyn Wilson (Cordova, Tenn.).

Returning from last season are three starters in Kayla Blackshear (Orlando, Fla.), Kara Dunn (Dallas, Ga.) and Tonie Morgan (Tallahassee, Fla.). The team’s leading rebounder last season, Blackshear averaged 6.4 rebounds per game to secure a team-high 193 on the season. Morgan returns as the team’s leading scorer from last season, finishing second on the team after averaging 9.8 points per game. Morgan also led the Jackets in assists, dishing out 114 as a freshman.

Coastal Carolina is led by second-year head coach Kevin Pederson. The Chanticleers are coming off a 2022-23 season with a 14-16 overall record and 9-9 ledger in the Sun Belt Conference. The Chants were picked to finish 10th in the Sun Belt preseason poll, while Deaja Richardson was named a Preseason All-Sun Belt third-team selection. She finished second on the team in scoring last season, averaging 13.9 points per game.

Georgia Tech and Coastal Carolina have met just once in program history, dating all the way back to Feb. 22, 1988. The Yellow Jackets took the decision in Atlanta, 92-60.
