Volleyball Ranked 25th In USA Today/AVCA Preseason Coaches Poll

Aug. 13, 2001

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech volleyball team is ranked 25th in the USA Today/AVCA coaches preseason Poll released on Monday. The Yellow Jackets, which return four starters to a team which finished the 2000 season with a 25-8 record, received 123 votes. Nebraska, the defending national champion, is atop the poll, receiving 1623 votes.

“It is great for our program to receive a preseason national ranking,” said head coach Shelton Collier. “We have many administrators, coaches, players and support staff who put in countless hours striving for excellence, so it is rewarding to have our program receive national recognition.”

This marks just the second time in the program’s history that Georgia Tech has earned a preseason ranking. In 1996 the Yellow Jackets opened the season ranked No.16.

“I am not one to downplay pre-season rankings as meaningless,” said Collier. “Programs like ours, who are in the 15-40 range are always jockeying for position, so this is great momentum for us.”

The Yellow Jackets open the season Aug. 31 against No. 14 Utah in the Utah Tournament in Salt Lake City, Utah.
