TOP STORYLINES
• Georgia Tech baseball looks to begin the march back to the postseason when it hosts The Atlanta Challenge for Opening Weekend 2019. The Yellow Jackets will welcome Illinois-Chicago, Richmond and West Virginia to The Flats.
• Preseason expectations have been at an all-time as the Yellow Jackets have built themselves into one of the oldest teams in the country, returning seven of nine starters and losing zero pitchers from a season ago.
• Georgia Tech enters the weekend ranked as high as No. 17 in the national preseason polls. Collegiate Baseball has the Jackets at 17th overall while NCBWA has Tech at No. 31.
• Two-way utility man Tristin English will look to carry forward his momentum from being a Cape Cod All-Star last summer. The redshirt-junior is a two-time 2019 preseason all-American entering this weekend, as he’s expected to be one of the country’s top two-way players.
• Back on the mound for Tech this year is Xzavion Curry and Connor Thomas, who became the first Tech duo to record 100 strikeouts apiece since 2011. (see “Two Players With 100 Strikeouts, Same Season” on p. 3)
• The Yellow Jackets will have to contend with the loss of Joey Bart and Wade Bailey to the MLB Draft, but Kyle McCann and Luke Waddell have looked primed and ready to take over at catcher and second base, respectively.
• The Yellow Jackets will get to see the Richmond Spiders for the first time in program history on Saturday, while also playing the West Virginia Mountaineers for the first time in 20 years.
• Tech and UIC squared off last season in a three-game series where the Jackets were able to take two close ones (5-0, 3-2) to open the series before dropping the Sunday matchup, 12-5.
