Thomas Named to Wuerffel Trophy Watch List

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech junior defensive back Juanyeh Thomas (Niceville, Fla./Niceville) joined 93 student-athletes from Division I FBS football in being named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List, it was announced Thursday. The Wuerffel Trophy recognizes college football players who serve others, have a positive impact on society and inspire greater service in the world.

Thomas is a fixture in the Atlanta community. He has served as a celebrity reader at a local elementary school, participated in a toy drive for a local low-income apartment complex, joined teammates to help clean a local Salvation Army facility and taken part in a community enhancement project by assisting with trash pickup in neighborhoods near Georgia Tech’s campus. He also helped create and deliver a Martin Luther King Day presentation in conjunction with Georgia Tech professors, including recruiting efforts to increase attendance and engagement at the event.

On the field, Thomas is a two-year starter at safety and has compiled 119 tackles, two interceptions and seven passes defended over the past two seasons. As a true freshman in 2018, he was named freshman all-America and first-team all-Atlantic Coast Conference as a kick returner. He holds five school records as a kick returner, including most kickoff returns for a touchdown in a season, career and consecutive games (2).

Thomas’ work in the community continues to be lauded as he was also nominated to the 2021 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team this preseason.

Semifinalists for the Wuerffel Trophy will be announced on Nov. 2 with finalists announced on Nov. 22, before the 2021 recipient is announced on Dec. 9.
