ATLANTA – Senior Ryan Bishop was named Atlantic Coast Conference Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week, announced by the league office on Monday. Bishop, a native of Signal Mountain, Tenn., led Georgia Tech to wins over Florida Atlantic (179-106) and Division III No. 2 Emory (144-89) in the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.
“It’s a great honor for Ryan and our team,” said Tech coach Stuart Wilson. “The whole team worked really hard during our Winter Training in Florida and Ryan is showing that you can swim fast times when you are training as much as we are. We look forward to the meet this weekend to see where we are against ACC competition.”
Bishop is the first Yellow Jacket to earn the honor this year and does so for the first time in his career. He clocked season-best times in the 200-yard freestyle, 500 free, 200 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke events.
The senior just missed an NCAA `B’ standard in the 100 breast (56.76) and was a couple of seconds off the `B’ cut of the 200 breast (2:03.72). Bishop took first place in the 200 back (1:53.07), 100 breast, 200 breast and 400 individual medley (3:58.40) and finished second in the 200 free (1:41.43) and 500 free (4:37.52).
Bishop ranks fourth in the ACC in the 200 IM (1:50.98), sixth in the 100 breast, 400 IM and eighth in the 200 breast for the season.
The Jackets will take on ACC foes Maryland and Virginia Tech this Saturday, Jan. 20, in Blacksburg, Va. The Tri-Meet is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
