ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team continued to build on a successful weekend at the St. Mary’s Health System Classic in Knoxville, Tenn., winning three of four matches on the final day of competition. The three-day tournament was contested at the University of Tennessee Tennis Center.
Yellow Jacket freshman Catherine Gunn was the winner of the Flight Three consolation bracket, as she won her second-straight match in a straight-set win over Minnesota’s Michaela Havelkova on Sunday. Gunn picked up the win by a 6-4, 6-4 score. Joining Gunn with a consolation-bracket win was sophomore Kristen Roberson, who cruised, in her final match of the weekend, blanking Minnesota’s Kelly Perry in a 6-0, 6-0 rout.
Tech’s third winner of the day was senior Laura Ozolins, who captured her first victory of the new year in the Flight Four seventh-place match, as she downed Laura Bugarello of Purdue in a 6-2, 7-6 (10-8), straight-set affair. Junior Jaime Wong reached the consolation final of Flight Two, but was unable to oust Minnesota’s Amy Thomas, falling in straight sets, 3-6, 2-6.
The Yellow Jackets will now take a week off, before returning to action during the weekend of October 5-7, when Tech will have players competing in both the Florida State and South Carolina Fall Invitationals, in Tallahassee, Fla., and Columbia, S.C., respectively.
