Tech Women's Tennis Rallies in Singles Play to Down Auburn, 6-1

ATLANTA – The 26th-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team spotted Auburn the doubles point in the match, but got things going in singles play, sweeping all six matches en route to a 6-1 victory over the 62nd-ranked Tigers on Sunday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

The Tigers (6-1) jumped on top early in the match, winning two of three doubles matches from the Yellow Jackets (7-2), with Tech’s lone win coming in a tiebreaker at No. 3. The Jackets’ team of Catherine Gunn and Mason Miller downed Auburn’s Sarah Suitor and Liz Sauerborn by an 8-7 (4) score.

Tech quickly turned the tables in singles play, sweeping all six matches to claim the win. Junior Jaime Wong got things started for the Jackets, winning her match at No. 2 by an impressive straight-set score of 6-2, 6-0 over Carolina Ramirez. Wong was followed by junior Mysti Morris, who defeated the Tigers’ Katia Illarionova at No. 1 by a 7-6 (5), 6-3 score.

Sophomore Sekita Grant was the next singles winner for the Jackets, as she defeated Carolina Maurer in the No. 4 spot in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Tech rookie Catherine Gunn upped her dual-match singles record to a perfect 9-0 as she used three sets to defeat Petra Bercik at No. 3 by a 7-6, 2-6, 6-1 score. Sophomore Fallon Koon clinched the match for Tech, defeating Liz Sauerborn in three sets, 1-6, 7-5, 6-1.

Junior Mason Miller was the final winner of the day for the Jackets, battling in three sets to defeat Sarah Suitor at No. 5, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (5).

The Yellow Jackets will now have a week off before returning to action when they travel to San Diego to face the Toreros in a match that will begin at 5:00 p.m. EST.
