ATHENS, Ga. – Led by a runner-up finish by senior Katie Griffin, the No. 24 Georgia Tech women’s cross country team opened its season in strong fashion Saturday, placing third at the University of Georgia’s Bulldog Stampede. The Jackets’ men’s team placed sixth.
The women tallied 55 points, finishing behind South Florida (32 points) and Tulsa (53 points). Tech’s men had 164 points. The host Bulldogs took the men’s race, scoring 46 points.
Griffin placed second overall in a five-kilometer time of 18:08. Also posting top-20 finishes for Tech were junior Neta Ezer (12th), freshman Carly Matthews (16th) and senior Eboni Crosby (20th). Sophomore Amanda Gilley finished 26th to close out the scoring for the Jackets.
South Florida’s Kristin Benton was the women’s winner, posting a time of 17:54.
On the men’s side, freshman Rob Kuhn had an impressive collegiate debut, placing 19th to lead Tech. He covered the 8K course in 27:02. Classmate Clark Rivers was also strong, finishing 35th in 28:10. Junior Daniel Moss (47th), sophomore Adam Jones (57th) and freshman Gaben Moore (58th) also figured in the scoring for Tech.
Nick Cordes of Ashland University won the men’s race in 25:01.
The Jackets return to action September 21 at the Georgia State Invitational in Atlanta.
