ATLANTA, GA (Sept. 10) – Georgia Tech’s volleyball team was knocked off 3-0 Friday evening by ninth-ranked Cal-Santa Barbara by a score of 3-0, with game scores of 15-5, 15-8, and 15-12. The Jackets dropped a pair of games on Friday in opening day play of the 1999 Georgia Tech/Courtyard by Marriott Classic, as Tech was defeated 3-2 earlier in the day by South Carolina.
In the nightcap, the Jackets (3-2) struggled against the tenacious Gauchos (4-0), who were led by two-time all-America outside hitter Roberta Gehlke, who compiled 19 kills on the evening.
Tech was led by sophomore outside hitter Maja Pachale (Schwerin, Germany) who notched 18 kills in the match.
In other scores from today’s tournament play at O’Keefe Gymnasium on the Georgia Tech campus, Arizona State defeated South Carolina and Virginia Tech each by 3-0 scores, and Santa Barbara shutout Virginia Tech 3-0.
Play in the tournament continues on Saturday, with games starting at 9:30 a.m. Georgia Tech will take the court at noon against Virginia Tech, and 5 p.m. against Arizona State.
