WACO, Texas – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team notched two doubles and three singles wins to cruise to a 4-1 win over San Diego State (0-2) in the first round of the ITA National Team Indoor Qualifier Thursday in Waco, Texas. The Yellow Jackets (3-1) will face No. 7 Baylor Saturday at 4 p.m. CT at the Baylor Tennis Center.

“Today we played fairly well but we competed like champions,” head coach Kenny Thorne said. “We are looking forward to our match tomorrow and we need to come out and play well to win.”

The Jackets took control early in doubles play when the duo of Kevin King and Doug Kenny clinched the point with a tough 9-7 win over SDSU’s Bartos Golas and Andre Feliz. Guillermo Gomez and Eliot Potvin struck first with an 8-3 win, but the Aztecs evened the match with an 8-4 victory by Achim Ceban and Giovanni Vaglietti over Ryan Smith and Miguel Muguruza before the King-Kenny heroics.

In singles play, King became the closer for the second time on the day. After freshman Dusan Miljevic and Gomez gave Tech a 3-1 lead with a pair of 6-2 victories, the Peachtree City, Ga. native sealed the match for Tech with a 6-4, 7-6 (3) thriller over San Diego State’s Achim Ceban at the No. 2 position for the win.

Potvin and sophomore Miguel Muguruza were tied at one set apiece, 2-6, 6-4 and 6-3, 3-6, respectively when the match was decided.

King is now 4-0 in both singles and doubles play on the 2009 season while Gomez remains undefeated in singles play at 2-0.

“Doug and Kevin came through strong under pressure in doubles,” Thorne added. “That, mixed with Dusan’s quick win in singles helped get us over the hump on the way to the win.”
