Macon, Ga. – Ollie Schniederjans fired a 5-under-par 67, while Seth Reeves and Richard Werenski also broke par as No. 2-ranked Georgia Tech shot a 6-under-par 282 and took the opening-round lead at the seventh annual Brickyard Collegiate golf tournament.

Reeves shot 2-under 70 and Werenski added a 1-under 71, while Anders Albertson added a 2-over 74 to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-shot lead over Virginia Tech (283, -5) on the 7,175-yard, par-72 Brickyard at Riverside course. Host Mercer is in third place at 284 (-4), followed by South Florida (286, -2) and Louisville (289, +1) to round out the top five in the 14-team field.
Leading the way as Tech bids for its second victory here in three years, Schniederjans recorded six birdies over his final 13 holes. The junior from Powder Springs, Ga., co-medalist at the Carpet Capital Collegiate and runner-up at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate this fall, is two strokes behind Georgia’s Keith Mitchell, who posted a 7-under 65 competing as an individual. The 8th-ranked Bulldogs did not have a counting player break par and are tied for sixth place with No. 14 Florida State.
“This was a good start to the weekend,” said Tech coach Bruce Heppler, whose team has held the tournament lead after all seven rounds it has played this fall. “It seems like it’s been a month since we last competed, and I thought it would take us some time to get going today. But we got after it from the start. We look forward to the next two days.”
Reeves (Sr., Duluth, Ga.), medalist at the Tar Heel event two weeks ago, is in a six-player tie for seventh place, while Werenski (Sr., South Hadley, Mass.) is in a five-way tie for 13th. Bo Andrews (Sr., Raleigh, N.C.) was Tech’s non-counter Friday with a 79, and freshman Vincent Whaley (McKinney, Texas) shot 76 in his collegiate debut while competing as an individual.
Round 2 begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday for the Yellow Jackets, who are paired with the Hokies and the Bears. The final round is set for Sunday.
