ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech softball team earned the Atlantic Coast Conference Sportsmanship Award, announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. Teams receiving the award have conducted themselves with a high degree of character and good sportsmanship, as determined by a vote of the league’s players and coaches.
Wake Forest was named the recipient of the ACC Sportsmanship School of the Year Award for the second consecutive year by virtue of winning outright sportsmanship awards in four of its 18 sponsored sports (22.2%). The Demon Deacons won sportsmanship awards in football, men’s basketball, men’s golf and men’s outdoor track and field. The traveling trophy will be on display at Wake Forest for an additional year.
The conference presents sportsmanship awards for each of its 25 sponsored sports. For the second time in the three-year existence of the award, every ACC school was honored as a sportsmanship award winner at least once during the 2005-06 season.
The concept of these awards was created by the ACC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in an effort to recognize teams who earned the utmost regard from their peers during competition. As is stated in the conference’s Mission Statement, “It [the ACC] strongly adheres to the principles of integrity and sportsmanship, and supports the total development of the student-athlete and each member institution’s athletics department staff, with the intent of producing enlightened leadership for tomorrow.”
