Wiley Ballard catches up with Coach Morales ahead of the Buzz Classic
Storylines
- Georgia Tech enters its fifth season under the tutelage of head coach Aileen Morales.
- 15 Yellow Jackets return from the 2021 season.
- Among the returners is a pair of preseason all-ACC selections in first baseman Tricia Awald and catcher Emma Kauf.
- A season ago, Awald was tabbed a Justin’s World of Softball Third Team All-American, NFCA First Team All-Region and First Team All-ACC first baseman.
- In the Tech record books, Awald set multiple historic marks in 2021 as she topped the ACC and tallied the third highest on-base percentage in a season in program history (.555) as well as the eighth highest batting average (.411) and slugging percentage (.726).
- Kauf, meanwhile, earned recognition as the top catcher in the conference as an All-ACC First Team and ACC All-Freshman Team member in 2021.
- Ace hurler Blake Neleman returns to the circle for the Jackets on the heels of a no-hitter against Syracuse near the end of the 2021 season and an ACC All-Tournament Team selection to conclude the year.
- Along with the bevy of returners, Tech also added Michigan transfer Chandler Dennis to the pitching staff as well as eight highly touted freshman across the board.
- During Morales’ tenure in the dugout as a player in the Buzz Classic, the Jackets went 18-2.
- A season ago, the White and Gold went a flawless 5-0 in the storied tournament, downing the likes of Boise State, Radford and Georgia State by a combined total of 44-3 with four of the five contests ending by mercy rule.
- In its history, Georgia Tech is 78-29 all-time in its renowned tournament.
Series Notes
- Georgia Tech is a perfect 5-0 all-time against Marshall, topping the Thundering Herd in four neutral-site contests. Most recently, the Jackets picked up a 7-6 win at home in 2013.
- Tech has never fallen to Saint Joseph’s, winning both contests in the history of the two programs during a doubleheader at home in 2004.
- The matchup between Georgia Tech and Villanova will be the first meeting of the two programs in each school’s history.
