Tech Hosts No. 13 Duke to Open ACC Play

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech softball (15-2) will welcome its first ranked opponent of the season in No. 13 Duke (13-3) to begin ACC play with a weekend series beginning Friday at Mewborn Field. The Yellow Jackets come into the series on an eight-game winning streak while the Blue Devils have won eight of their last nine games.

Parking

Parking will be available in the McCamish lot for games one and three on Friday and Sunday. For game two on Saturday, parking will be available in the Family Housing deck.

Promotions

Game one on Friday will feature a Georgia Tech t-shirt giveaway for Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer. Game two on Saturday will be Y2K Day, accompanied by a clear fanny pack giveaway.

Storylines

  • Georgia Tech has outscored its opponents 109-37 to date.
  • The Yellow Jackets have won eight straight games, tying the most since claiming eight straight in 2019.
  • Tech is off to a 15-2 start, the best for the program in 12 years. The 2010 Yellow Jackets started off 20-2 on the way to regular season and ACC tournament titles, making an NCAA regional appearance.
  • The White and Gold are currently 11-0 at home, tying the 1991 Yellow Jackets for the best home start in program history.
  • Junior Blake Neleman tossed a career-high 13 strikeouts in the season opener against Saint Joseph’s, fanning 12 of the 13 batters on the way to a complete game win. Neleman nearly matched that total against Mississippi State with 12 punchouts in another complete game win over Mississippi State. She now owns seven complete game wins, two shutouts and a 9-1 record in 10 appearances on the year.
  • Graduate slugger Tricia Awald has gotten a hit in 15 games and reached base in all of Tech’s 17 games this season.
  • The Jackets are currently top 10 in the country and among the league’s best at the plate in multiple categories – eighth in the nation and second in the conference in doubles on the season (31), seventh in the land and second in the league in on-base percentage (0.448) and leading the NCAA in walks (83).
  • Tech stacks up among the nation’s best defensively as well, placing fourth in the country and atop the conference in fielding percentage (.988).
  • The White and Gold have been proficient at the plate overall, ranking fifth in the ACC in batting average (.324).
  • Awald is among the nation’s best at the dish, currently 13th in the country and leading the conference in on-base percentage (.615).
  • Junior catcher Emma Kauf has excelled in hits for extra bases, sitting in third in the NCAA and leading the ACC in doubles (8). She also leads the squad in hits, placing 17th in the nation and third in the league in hits (23).
  • To date, Neleman is tied for the nation’s lead with nine wins in the circle this season. She’s also ninth in the country and second in the conference in both strikeouts (77) and innings pitched (56).

Series Notes

  • Georgia Tech trails Duke 4-2 in the all-time series.
  • The Yellow Jackets lead the series on the road after taking two of three games in the first series between the two in 2018.

Standing room only tickets will be sold for $2 each if all other sections are sold out. Georgia Tech students and faculty/staff can receive free admission to regular season home games while seats remain available by showing a valid BuzzCard at the entrance.
