Watch White roll in a birdie putt
Las Vegas, Nev. –
James White fired a 4-under-par 68 Sunday to complete his fifth consecutive top-10 finish, but the rest of Georgia Tech’s golf team couldn’t match his performance, and the fourth-ranked Yellow Jackets tumbled to a ninth-place finish at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters.
White, a junior from Acworth, Ga., started the tournament with a pair of 74s, but on Sunday recorded five birdies with one bogey to jump from 17th place to a tie for fifth place at even-par 216. White has won two tournaments this year and has not finished lower than eighth in his last five events.
But the Yellow Jackets had to count a pair of 79s Sunday from John-Tyler Griffin and Richard Werenski, and Kyle Scott and Paul Haley each shot 80 as Tech posted the day’s highest team total of 306 (16 over par), falling from fifth to ninth place in the 15-team field.
Top-ranked Oklahoma State, which was tied for third place with the Yellow Jackets after the first round, completed its move up the leaderboard Sunday with the best round of the day, 5-under 283, and won the tournament by seven shots over Texas A&M. The Cowboys were the only team to finish 54 holes under par (1-under 863). The Aggies finished at 6-over 870.
California, the 36-hole leader, slipped to third place at 9-over 872, followed by UCLA (+12), Arizona State (+25), Georgia (+26), UNLV (+27) and Duke (+29). Tech completed the tournament t 30-over-par 894.
Morgan Hoffman of Oklahoma State won medalist honors with a 10-under-par score of 206, two shots ahead of Jordan Russell of Texas A&M, the leader after 36 holes.
The Yellow Jackets return to action next Sunday in the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship at Hawks Ridge Golf Club in Ball Ground, Ga.
