MIAMI – Georgia Tech baseball got fine pitching out of RHP Luke Schmolke and RHP Aeden Finateri to keep the game close, but ultimately fell 4-2 on Friday night to No. 17 Miami at Mark Light Field.
The Yellow Jackets (21-17, 7-12 ACC) managed just two hits, including a two-run home run from John Giesler to give Tech its scoring for the game. The Hurricanes (24-14, 11-8 ACC) were limited to just three earned runs on the day and scored three of their runs with two outs.
Schmolke (4-3) went 5.0 innings and surrendered just three earned runs on seven hits while he punched out six on the night. Finateri then came in and retired all nine of the batters he faced with two strikeouts to hold the deficit to two runs.
At the plate, Gielser’s big blast led the way to drive in Jackson Finley, who drew one of Tech’s two walks on the day (Stephen Reid the other). Jett Lovett recorded Tech’s second hit.
RHP Gage Ziehl (5-4) won the battle for Miami, going eight innings of two-hit, two-run work with five strikeouts, forcing 10 groundouts and nine flyouts. RHP Andrew Walters got his fourth save of the season. Zach Levenson led the hitters, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Georgia Tech will look to even the series when it plays Game 2 against No. 17 Miami on Saturday, April 22. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra.
