Tech Duo Advances to Semifinals of Wilson/ITA Regional

Chapel Hill, N.C. – Georgia Tech’s David North and George Gvelesiani advanced to the doubles semifinals Saturday when they defeated Corey Parr and Charles Sartor of Wake Forest, 8-6, in the fourth round of the Wilson/ITA Men’s Mideast Indoor Regional Championships. The four-day tournament is being played at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the campus of the University of North Carolina.

North and Gvelesiani, a No. 12 seed, defeated James Madison’s Mike Smith and Jesse Tarr, 8-3, in the opening round, then defeated William and Mary’s Kavi Sud and Keziel Juneau, 8-6. In Friday’s Round of 32, the Tech doubles team eliminated Sergi Arumi and Arnaud Lecloerec of Virginia Commonwealth in an 8-3 victory. North and Gvelesiani will face The Citadel’s Daniel Dossetor and James Eason in Sunday’s semifinals.

North also competed in singles play Saturday but was eliminated when he lost to Virginia’s No. 6 seed Treat Huey, 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-1.

The 2006 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships is the second of three national championship events for college tennis this season. The ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships feature a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field for men and women, including: qualifiers from these Wilson/ITA Regional Championships held across the country, the ITA National Small College champions, top performers from the ITA All-American Championships and at-large card selections made by the ITA National Tournament Committee.
