Tech Cross Country Captures Pair of Runner-up Finishes at Georgia State Invitational

ATLANTA – With several strong performances by freshmen runners, the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s cross country teams each placed second Saturday at the Georgia State Invitational. The meet was held at GSU’s Panthersville Course.

The women scored 43 points, while the men tallied 45 points. The host Panthers placed first among Division I competitors in both the men’s and women’s races.

Tech’s women had four runners among the meet’s top eight finishers, led by freshman Carla Uribe, who posted a five-kilometer time of 19:55.59 to place third. Junior Jenny Lentz, running in her first cross country competition, placed fifth. She was joined in the top eight by freshman Catherine Spoth (seventh) and junior Amanda Gilley (eighth). Senior Laura Ginn placed 24th to close out the scoring for Tech.

The men had five finishers among the top 11 Division I runners. Leading the way was sophomore Adam Jones, who placed seventh in an 8K time of 28:44.73. He was the first of five consecutive Tech runners to cross the finish line. Finishing eighth through 11th were Brian O’Neill, Mark Luffel, Gaben Moore and Jimmy DeYonker.

A pair of freshmen, Michael Sinagra and Eric Southard, finished 16th and 17th, respectively.

The Jackets return to action Friday, September 27, at the Great American Invitational in Charlotte, N.C.
