How it Happened
The Yellow Jackets got on a roll early in the first set, winning four straight points thanks in large part to three Bergmann kills to move in front, 6-2. Tech (21-8, 13-5 ACC) maintained its lead up to an 8-4 advantage, but Marquette (29-3, 17-1 Big East) bounced back to come away with seven of the next eight points and slip ahead, 11-9. The Golden Eagles avoided surrendering the lead up to a 15-14 advantage, but Georgia Tech used a three-point run to regain the lead, 17-15. Marquette evened things up at 17, resulting in seven following tie score lines pushing the match to 23 all. The Golden Eagles took the next two points, wrapping up the set with a three-point burst for a 25-23 set one win.
Marquette carried its momentum over into the second set, winning the first three points and moving up to an 8-4 advantage. The Yellow Jackets took five of the next six point to even things up at nine apiece, but three more to follow by the Golden Eagles pushed them back ahead, 12-9. After a Tech point next, the two sides alternated the next 10 points up to a 17-15 lead for Marquette. The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 21-17, holding on to close things out for a 25-20 victory in set two.
Marquette remained hot starting off the third set, taking the first four points and pushing further to a 7-1 lead. Winning six of the next eight points, the White and Gold climbed right back into it to trail by one, 9-8. The Golden Eagles responded with three consecutive points, however, increasing separation to 13-8. As the back-and-forth battle continued, Georgia Tech matched Marquette’s burst with a three-point run of its own, moving back within three to trail 14-11. After the two sides traded three points each, the Golden Eagles took control using a four-point run for a 21-16 advantage. Marquette closed the door shortly after, sealing a 25-19 win in set three to clinch the victory.

Competitive Drive Initiative
In a unified endeavor, Georgia Tech, the Georgia Tech Foundation, Georgia Tech athletics and the Alexander-Tharpe Fund have come together to accelerate funding for student-athlete scholarships with the launch of the Competitive Drive Initiative. The initiative kicks off with the Accelerate GT Match Program, where any new gift to the A-T Fund’s Athletic Scholarship Fund made through Dec. 31 will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Georgia Tech Foundation, up to $2.5 million. Should Accelerate GT reach its $2.5 million fundraising goal, the matching gift would result in a $5 million impact for Georgia Tech athletics.
