Tech Set to Host No. 3 Florida State

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech softball (15-5, 0-3 ACC) is set to host No. 3 Florid State (20-1, 2-1 ACC) for its second consecutive ranked conference series this weekend, playing a doubleheader Friday and the series finale Sunday at Mewborn Field.

Storylines

  • Georgia Tech has outscored its opponents 114-59 to date.
  • Tech is off to a 15-5 start, the best for the program in 11 years. The 2011 Yellow Jackets started off 21-4 on the way to an ACC regular season title and an NCAA regional appearance.
  • The White and Gold are currently 11-3 at home after opening with 11 straight home wins to tie the 1991 Yellow Jackets for the best home start in program history.
  • Junior Blake Neleman tossed a career-high 13 strikeouts in the season opener against Saint Joseph’s, fanning 12 of the 13 batters on the way to a complete game win. Neleman nearly matched that total against Mississippi State with 12 punchouts in another complete game win over Mississippi State. She now owns seven complete game wins, two shutouts and a 9-3 record in 13 appearances on the year.
  • Graduate slugger Tricia Awald has gotten a hit in 15 games and reached base in 18 of Tech’s 19 games this season.
  • The Jackets are currently among the nation’s best and near the top of the league at the plate in multiple categories – 19th in the country and fourth in the conference in doubles on the season (32), 18th in the land and third in the league in on-base percentage (0.421) and fourth in the NCAA and atop the ACC in walks (90).
  • Tech stacks up among the nation’s best defensively as well, placing 16th in the country and fourth in the conference in fielding percentage (.980).
  • Awald is among the nation’s best at the dish, currently 12th in the country and leading the conference in on-base percentage (.581) while ranking 24th in the land and second in the league in walks per game (0.85).
  • Junior catcher Emma Kauf has excelled in hits for extra bases, sitting in 15th in the NCAA and leading the ACC in doubles (8). She also leads the squad in hits, placing third in the league with 25.
  • To date, Neleman is ninth in the land and second in the league with nine wins in the circle this season. She’s also 17th in the country and second in the conference in strikeouts (89) while ranking 19th in the NCAA and second in the ACC in innings pitched (66.2).

Series Notes

  • Georgia Tech trails Florida State 65-26 in the all-time series.
  • The Yellow Jackets’ last victory over the Seminoles came in the form of a 9-1 triumph in a neutral contest in 2012.

Despite stadium seating for the series being sold out, standing room only tickets are $2 each and available HERE. Georgia Tech students and faculty/staff can receive free admission to regular season home games while seats remain available by showing a valid BuzzCard at the entrance.
