Tech Basketball Program Adds Alex Luyk

ATLANTA — Alex Luyk, a 6-8 forward from Mobile, Ala., has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Georgia Tech, the Yellow Jackets’ third signee for the 1999-2000 season.

Luyk joins 6-6 wing player Clarence Moore, the Louisiana 5-A Player of the Year and a USA Today honorable mention all-America, and 6-1 all-state guard Ross Chouest, both of South LaFourche High School in Galliano, La., in Tech’s recruiting class.

“Alex needs some development time, but he has the potential to develop into a fine player,” said Tech head coach Bobby Cremins. “Although he may not have an immediate impact in our lineup, he gives us depth in the frontcourt behind Alvin Jones and Jason Collier.

“Alex is an excellent student, and we are very happy to have him join our program.”

Luyk is a native of Madrid, Spain, who attended McGill-Toolen High School in Mobile, Ala., the last two years, playing for coach Steve North.

As a senior, Luyk averaged 10 points, four rebounds and three blocked shots per game as he helped McGill-Toolen to a 25-8 record and a berth in the final eight in 6-A, Alabama’s largest classification.

“Alex has a lot of potential,” said North. “He’s still growing, and I believe he can be an outstanding player in the future.”

Luyk’s father, Cliff, was an outstanding player in Spain and is currently the head coach of the Real Madrid club team, while his older brother, Serge, played collegiately at St. John’s.
