Tech Baseball Begins Individual Workouts This Week

ATLANTA – With just two weeks of school in the books, the 2009 Georgia Tech baseball team opens the fall campaign with individual workouts this week, beginning Tuesday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets return 22 letterwinners from the 2008 squad that finished 41-21 and advanced to the championship game of the NCAA Athens Regional, and the squad welcomes 13 newcomers in 2009, including two that elected to enroll at Tech despite being selected in the 2008 Major League Baseball draft over the summer.

Top returnees include a trio of seniors in catcher Jason Haniger, outfielder Chris House and OF/1B Luke Murton as well as junior starting pitcher Zach Von Tersch and sophomore righty Deck McGuire. Shortstop Derek Dietrich, the 2008 National Freshman Hitter of the Year, first baseman Tony Plagman, center fielder Jeff Rowland, and right-hander Andrew Robinson also return.

The Jackets will participate in individual workouts this week, while the first full-squad practice begins Monday, Sept. 8. Listed below is the full fall schedule for Tech baseball:

Scouts from around the area will be in attendance on Sept. 29, when the Yellow Jackets participate in timed drills for major league scouts beginning at 3:15 p.m. at the stadium.

Beginning Sept. 22, Tech will play intra-squad games every Monday, Wednesday and Sunday and have every Saturday off. The team will not hold practice during fall break (Oct. 11-14), but will resume with an intra-squad game Wed., Oct. 15. Intra-squad game times will be 4 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays.

The annual White & Gold World Series begins Sun., Oct. 19 and continues through Wed. Oct. 22 with full games at Russ Chandler Stadium. First pitch for Sunday’s game is 2 p.m., while the weekday games begin at 4 p.m..

The Yellow Jackets will wrap up the fall campaign with their alumni weekend, which coincides with Georgia Tech’s Homecoming Weekend for football Oct. 25. The morning of Tech’s football game against Virginia, the Yellow Jacket baseball team will host a golf scramble for all baseball alums. The next day (Sunday), Tech will hold its annual alumni game at Russ Chandler Stadium. First pitch will be at 1 p.m.
