Jan. 18, 2008

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s (1-5, 0-2 ACC) and women’s (4-4, 0-2) swimming teams return from holiday training to host Virginia Tech Saturday at Noon at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. The Hokie men come into the meet at 7-3 while the No. 22-ranked women are 9-2.

The Georgia Tech men’s team is 4-2 all-time against Virginia Tech while the women are 0-3. Virginia Tech earned a sweep last season in Blacksburg, Va.

“This is our first meet following holiday training and we are looking forward to getting back into competition,” Head Coach Stu Wilson said. “With just four weeks left until the ACC Championship, this meet will give us a great chance to see where we are at. Virginia Tech is a very good program, but now we have a chance to show that all of our hard work in training is paying off.”

This will be a 16-event meet with no diving. It will feature the 200-yard medley relay, 1000-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly, 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard breaststroke, 500-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard individual medley and the 400-yard free relay.

Next Saturday, the Yellow Jackets will host Emory and Vanderbilt in the final meet of the regular season. The 11 seniors will be honored and Tech will also be participating in “Seconds For The Cure.” The Georgia Tech women’s swimming and diving team is partnering with the Atlanta Chapter of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in an effort to raise awareness and funds to help fight the cause of breast cancer.

Tech head coach Stu Wilson will establish times for each student-athlete in the various events that they will try and break. Fans, alums, parents and family members can then pledge an amount of money they wish to donate for every second the student-athlete finishes below that established time. Pink t-shirts will also be sold to allow spectators to show their support for the fight against breast cancer.

Live stats of both meets will be available at www.ramblinwreck.com. A full recap and results will be available after the conclusion of the day’s events.
