Súper Clásico Coming to Bobby Dodd Stadium

THE FLATS – Top-echelon professional soccer returns to Georgia Tech’s campus this fall when two of international soccer’s most recognizable clubs, CD Chivas de Guadalajara and Club América, bring their Súper Clásico rivalry to Bobby Dodd Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 25, PRIMETIME Sports and Georgia Tech athletics announced on Thursday.

Chivas and Club América are the winningest clubs in the history of Liga MX, the top division of Mexican soccer, with América owning 13 championships and Chivas claiming 12. Their Súper Clásico rivalry, which was first played in 1943, is the biggest in Mexican soccer and one of the biggest in the world. Their fan bases are also widely recognized as the largest in Mexican soccer and two of the largest in the world.

Bobby Dodd Stadium joins the L.A. Coliseum (Los Angeles), Soldier Field (Chicago) and the Cotton Bowl (Dallas) as historic venues in the United States to host Súper Clásico in recent years. The match is being held in September to celebrate Mexico’s independence month.

“We are very excited for two of international soccer’s premier clubs – CD Chivas de Guadalajara and Club América – to renew their historic rivalry at one of sports’ most historic venues, Bobby Dodd Stadium,” Georgia Tech director of athletics Todd Stansbury said. “It is our long-stated goal to bring premier external events to Bobby Dodd Stadium for our students and fans, as well as fans from across Atlanta and the world, to enjoy. El Súper Clásico certainly fits that bill. We’re looking forward to a great match and a one-of-a-kind experience on Sept. 25.”

Georgia Tech previously hosted professional soccer when Major League Soccer’s Atlanta United played the first nine home matches of its inaugural season in front of sold-out crowds at Bobby Dodd Stadium in 2017. Opened in 1913, Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field is the oldest on-campus stadium in NCAA Division I FBS (the highest level of college football).

Various activities will take place throughout Atlanta leading up to the match, including local appearances by team legends, mascots, trophies and celebrities, as well as musical performances and a charity event, which will be revealed as the match approaches.
