After spending the past two years as a graduate assistant on the Georgia Tech men’s basketball staff, Shawn Valentine was named to the position of assistant director of operations in the summer of 2019.
Valentine, 27, is responsible for supervision of Tech’s basketball facilities as is relates to outside rental, upkeep of all team areas, management of equipment and supplies, and organization of student-athletes’ participation in team events and community service.
A four-year letterwinner as a basketball player at Rider University, Valentine gained experience in athletics communications and as an equipment manager in addition to his studies and competition. He worked as an athletic equipment manager for three years and in the sports communications for one.
On the court, the 6-7 forward played in 128 games over his four-year career, including all 33 games as a senior, when he averaged 4.5 points and 3.0 rebounds as the team’s captain. True to his surname, he scored a career-high 17 points with six rebounds and five blocks against Niagara on Valentine’s Day.
The Sicklerville, N.J., native graduated in May of 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in public relations and completed requirements for his master’s degree in leadership from Grand Canyon University. In the time between his graduation from Rider and beginning as a GA at Georgia Tech, Valentine served as a coach and counselor at various basketball camps.
