Josh Thompson is in his fourth season as a key member of Georgia Tech football’s staff and his first as assistant athletics director for football administration.
A veteran of the college football landscape, Thompson previously served as director of football operations at Georgia Tech (2023-25), director of football operations at Louisville (2019-22) and assistant athletics director for football and equipment operations at Appalachian State (2014-18). In his 12 seasons directing football operations, Thompson’s teams won two conference championships and earned nine bowl berths (with six wins).
Prior to becoming assistant A.D. at App State, Thompson served as the Mountaineers’ director of team services for five years (2009-14), overseeing the equipment operations for all 20 of the school’s varsity sports programs.
Thompson’s resume also includes a year as athletic equipment manager at Texas State (2007-08) and two years as a graduate assistant in football equipment operations at Troy (2005-07). He began his professional career as equipment manager, assistant athletics administrator and junior varsity girls basketball coach at Northwestern H.S. in his hometown of Rock Hill, S.C.
Thompson earned a bachelor’s degree in recreation management from Appalachian State in 2002 and a master’s in sport and fitness management from Troy in 2007. He and his wife, Lindsey, have a son, Jacob.
