Sims Named to Unitas Golden Arm Award Watch List

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech quarterback Jeff Sims (Jacksonville, Fla./Sandalwood H.S.) is on the official watch list for the 2022 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, which was unveiled by the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation on Wednesday. The Unitas Golden Arm award annually honors college football’s top upperclassman quarterback.

Sims enters his third season as Georgia Tech’s starting quarterback in 2022. In just 17 collegiate games (he was limited to 10 games in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and seven last season due to injury), he has accounted for 4,213 yards of total offense (3,349 passing, 864 rushing) and 35 touchdowns (25 passing, 10 rushing). He already ranks ninth in Georgia Tech history in passing yards, eighth in touchdown passes, 11th in total offense, 10th in completions (254), fifth in completion percentage (.571) and seventh in passing efficiency (129.8).

The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award has been presented annually since 1987. Former winners include Sims’ current coach, Georgia Tech quarterbacks coach Chris Weinke, who earned the honor at Florida State in 2000. Current Atlanta Falcons quarterback Marcus Mariota (Oregon – 2014) and former Falcons’ signal-caller Matt Ryan (Boston College – 2007) are also among the Golden Arm Award recipients. Pitt’s Kenny Pickett won the award last season.

The award’s preseason watch list, semifinalists, finalists and recipient are selected by the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm selection committee, a group of prominent journalists, commentators, announcers and former players. Candidates are chosen based on on- and off-field performance. The winner of the 2022 Golden Arm Award will be presented at the annual Golden Arm Award banquet and celebration on Dec. 7 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Baltimore.

Sims and Georgia Tech open the 2022 campaign on Monday, Sept. 5 when they host No. 4 Clemson in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. and the game will be televised nationally on ESPN.
