Seven Yellow Jackets Qualify for East Prelims

THE FLATS – Seven members of Georgia Tech’s track and field teams – six women and one man – have been invited to participate in next week’s NCAA Division I Track and Field East Preliminary Championships in Bloomington, Ind., the NCAA announced on Thursday.

Nicole Fegans highlights Tech’s seven qualifiers, as she holds the East Preliminary’s No. 2 time in the 5,000-meter run (15:41.98) and No. 6 mark in the 10,000m (33:00.89). In the final season of her illustrious Georgia Tech career, Fegans is a five-time All-American, including second-team honors in the 5,000m at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

The Yellow Jackets’ other qualifiers for the 2022 east prelims include Olivia Moore (pole vault – 14th – 4.25m), Shanty Papakosta (high jump – 23rd – 1.79m), Taylor Grimes (100m hurdles – 24th – 13.37), Lydia Troupe (400m hurdles – 31st – 58.90) and Carla du Plessis (high jump – 32nd – 1.77m) on the women’s side and John Watkins (triple jump – 34th – 6.56m) for the men.

There are two preliminary championships for the 2022 NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships – east (Bloomington) and west (Fayetteville, Ark.) – consisting of the top 48 performers in the region in each event.

The top 12 finishers in each event at the preliminary championships will qualify for the national championships, which will be held June 8-11 in Eugene, Ore.
