Rath, Richardson, Stowers, and Striplin Named Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week

Zachary Rath, Lacey Richardson, Evan Stowers, and Christy Striplin were named Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, February 20, 2006.

Rath, a junior from Montreal, Canada, helped the men’s tennis team to two wins on the week, defeating Georgia State and Alabama. Rath recorded two singles wins on the week, including a three-set victory over No. 87 Javier Bes from Alabama and a straight set win at No. 2 singles against Georgia State. In doubles play, he won two matches with Scott Blackmon at No. 2 doubles to remain perfect in doubles play this season.

Richardson, a freshman from Sharpsburg, Ga., led Georgia Tech to the Lady Panther Invitational Title this weekend. Richardson, tossed her first collegiate no-hitter on Sunday against Eastern Kentucky in a Tech 8-0 win in five innings. She threw all five innings, striking out one, to improve her record to 1-1. Richardson threw three scoreless innings against Kennesaw State on Saturday, and worked three scoreless innings against Chattanooga on Wednesday, striking out four. She made three appearances on the week, ending 1-0, and not allowing a run in 11 innings of action, striking out a total of five.

Stowers, a sophomore from Independence, Ky., became the first Tech diver since the 1994 season to win the ACC title in the 3 meter competition. Stowers then followed up that performance by finishing second in the 1 meter diving, again earning All-ACC honors and giving the men’s team 38 points as they head into this week’s ACC Championships.

Striplin, a freshman from Birmingham, Ala., won two singles matches and a doubles match to help the women’s tennis team to a 2-0 record on the week. Against Alabama, she won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles and then followed that performance with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles against Auburn. She also teamed with Kacie Anson to win 8-6 against Auburn, helping the Jackets capture the doubles point.
