No. 9 Georgia Escapes Tech, 4-3

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech men’s tennis pushed No. 9 Georgia to the edge on Sunday eventually dropping the match, 4-3.

The Yellow Jackets had a strong start to the singles action. Keshav Chopra took on No. 23 Trent Bryde at No. 3 singles, winning the match, 6-3, 6-2. Set one was a back and forth affair before Chopra took the final two games to take the set, 6-3. Chopra found his groove in the second set after being tied 2-2, breaking two serves on the way to a 6-2 set win.

At No. 1 singles, No. 12 Andres Martin took his match shortly after Chopra, 7-5, 6-1. Martin worked through a tough first set before figuring out his opponent, No. 25 Philip Henning. Brandon McKinney was the next to finish, taking his match at No. 6 singles against Miguel Perez Pena, 6-4, 6-1.

Tech was leading at this point in the match, 3-1, after dropping the doubles point but Georgia was leading on all three remaining courts. The Bulldogs quickly clawed back a point on court five, 6-4, 6-1.

After winning a pivotal tiebreaker in set one, 7-5, Georgia kept the momentum going into the second set winning it 6-1 to tie up the match at 3-3.

The lone remaining match was on court four. Georgia has taken the first set 7-5 and were up in the second set 3-1. Tech fought hard tying up the match at 5-5 before dropping the next two points leading to a 7-5 set win and a 4-3 win for Georgia.

The White and Gold return to action on March 4 in the first ACC action of the season at Notre Dame at 5 p.m.
