No. 5 Yellow Jackets Set to Host Georgia Tech Classic

THE FLATS – No. 5 Georgia Tech volleyball (5-0) will host its second consecutive home tournament this season with the Georgia Tech Classic in O’Keefe Gymnasium this weekend, readying for a pair of top-10 matchups against No. 10 BYU (5-1) and No. 8 Ohio State (1-3).

The Yellow Jackets will face off against the Cougars on Thursday at 7 p.m. for their first action, then wrap up the tournament with a grudge match against the Buckeyes on Sunday at 1 p.m. following last season’s Sweet 16 sweep for the White and Gold.

Storylines

  • The Jackets held their second highest ranking in program history of No. 5 for the second consecutive week in this week’s AVCA DI Coaches Poll. This year’s team joins the 2003 squad, who held the five spot through four consecutive weeks.
  • The Jackets’ selection marks the fourth consecutive appearance in the AVCA’s top 10 after being tabbed No. 8 at the end of the 2021 season and landing among the best in each of the three polls in 2022.
  • The Yellow Jackets have been listed in 41 straight top 25 polls to date. The No. 5 ranking remains the highest for Tech over that span and overall since 2003.
  • Senior outside hitter Julia Bergmann has claimed the first two ACC Player of the Week awards this season. She earns this week’s recognition after another solid outing at the home-hosted GT Invitational.
  • The Brazilian bomber owns seven career ACC Player of the Week awards and nine total weekly ACC honors after picking up a pair of ACC Freshman of the Week titles during her first season on The Flats. Bergmann was named ACC Player of the Week four times last season, the most by any player in the conference since 2015.
  • The vaunted outside hitter garnered GT Invitational MVP honors after piling up 47 kills at a .392 clip, 23 digs, nine blocks (one solo, eight assisted) and five aces. With those numbers, she currently leads the nation in points per set (6.32) and is second in the country in kills per set (5.41).
  • Sophomore outside hitter Bianca Bertolino and senior middle blocker Erin Moss joined Bergmann on the GT Invitational all-tournament team. Bertolino led the team with 42 digs to go with 19 kills and seven aces, while Moss added 19 kills of her own at a .342 clip and tallied a team-high 12 blocks.
  • As a unit, Georgia Tech is currently top five in the ACC in hitting percentage (.293), blocks per set (2.41) and aces per set (1.82).
  • Tech was picked to finish third in the ACC by the league’s coaches for the third consecutive year.
  • Bergmann, Bertolino and Moss were each selected preseason all-ACC.
  • Going beyond 2019’s NIVC title, Tech has won 63 of its last 75 matches.
  • Over the course of the past four seasons, Georgia Tech is 38-5 at home in O’Keefe Gymnasium. The Jackets went 12-3 on The Flats in 2021. Tech is 297-102 (.744) all time in O’Keefe Gymnasium’s 28-year history.

Series History

  • Georgia Tech and BYU will meet for the first time in the history of both programs on Thursday.
  • In the most recent contest between the two, Tech swept Ohio State in last season’s Sweet 16. The Buckeyes claimed the previous two matchups.

Georgia Tech will hit the road, heading to Arkansas on Sept. 15 for an 8 p.m. contest and Georgia on Sept. 17 for a 7 p.m. matchup.
